This issue of the journal Form@re is entirely devoted to contributions engaging with the themes articulated in the Manifesto della pedagogia laica . Its aim is to explore, from both a scientific and cultural perspective, the defining features of a pedagogy grounded in secular principles.
“While historically this need emerged in relation to the interplay between the state and the religious sphere, today it arises primarily in response to ideologies and political theologies that tend to constrain the ethical and intellectual autonomy of individuals and civil society. In this sense, secularity is first and foremost expressed in the principle of freedom of thought: freedom from constraints and impositions, and freedom to engage in critical inquiry and constructive vision within the domains of research and public debate” (Manifesto for Secularly Inspired Pedagogy, Preamble to the Manifesto).
The antidogmatic character, understood as resistance to any preconceived and irrational imposition, endows secular thought with a distinctly emancipatory dimension, both at the individual and collective levels, also within a European and international perspective. It further enables the development of educational practices capable of including heterogeneous subjectivities and of countering closed and normalising identity-based frameworks.
This Issue wants to bring together both general contributions and those addressing specific research domains that engage with the issues raised in the Manifesto. These contributions are expected to be guided by the need to safeguard educational research and to foster its development in relation to diverse social and territorial contexts, promoting a dialogue among universities, schools, educational agencies and services, and civil society.
